What does the Bible have to say about essential oils?

There are more than 400 mentions of essential oils in the Bible. During biblical times, essential oils were common. This is why most scriptural passages don’t elaborate on how essential oils were used – it was assumed information.

Thirty three oils are mentioned by name in the Bible.  Some of the most important were:

Myrtle is mentioned 6 times.  Modern Day Uses:  encourages proper nasal function and supports normal respiratory function – especially for children, supports healthy hormone balance

Sandalwood is mentioned 5 times.  Modern day uses:  cognitive support, to reduce absentmindedness, to slow signs of aging on the skin such as liver spots

Cedarwood is mentioned 70 times. Modern day uses:  provides nervous system support during times of stress, promoting mental clarity, promoting restful sleep

Myrrh is mentioned 156 times.  Modern day uses: supporting healthy hormone levels, slowing signs of aging on the skin, and calming tantrums and over-sensitivity

Cinnamon is mentioned 69 times.  Modern day uses:   endocrine support, maintains normal blood sugar levels and supports immune function

St. Hildegard was a 12 century healer, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, and visionary.

Hildegard’s medicinal and scientific writings developed through her experiences  cultivating her monastery’s herbal garden and infirmary.  She became renowned for her healing powers involving practical applications of what could be found in nature.  She documented the value of garden materials for home remedies and provided future generations with a perfect example of respect for the powerful elements found in nature- knowledge still in use today.

She coined the term “Veridita” to convey nature’s divine healing power transferred from plants to humans.
